Modern Music and Recording is a course designed to nurture both passive and active skills in all of River Dell's 8th Grade students.  It seeks to foster an understanding of music's nature, underlying structure and cultural significance through listening, creating and performing.  Music of various styles are employed to define the nature of rhythm, melody, texture and form, highlighting the commonality of these elements across the spectrum of musical genre.
    Music Literacy- Reviewing and developing basic skills in reading music notation as it relates to pitch, rhythm, harmony, meter, tempo, and dynamics, along with piano keyboard navigation and basic composition.
    Music Appreciation- Exposure to various musical styles and composers in contemporary music, beginning with the origins of Jazz and following through to current popular styles.
    Instrument Demonstration- Introduction and exposure to the various instruments used in contemporary popular music.
    Music Technology- Introduction to available music technologies, as they relate to music composition and production.
