STEM 8 will be offered to all students at River Dell Middle School in Grade 8, as an elective. Building on STEM 7 experiences, students will be challenged with more in depth engineering problems and use more sophisticated tools and machines to solve them.
Students can enroll in STEM 8 without having taken STEM 7 because the first unit of STEM 8 reviews the essential learning of the design process and tool safety covered in STEM 7.
S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) has become an essential educational component across the nation. The blending of these four areas is an all but natural fit when implementing meaningful hands-on problem solving activities for students.
This course will allow students the opportunity to apply specific mathematical and scientific principles in order to develop solutions to various engineering challenges. Student creativity and risk taking are emphasized in a design and problem solving format that allows them to engage their original solutions in an encouraging environment. STEM 8 will also introduce students to programming and robotics. They will be challenged to design and build robots which are then programmed to perform different tasks while solving specific problems.
Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators and leaders! Development of “disruptive technology” which changes existing paradigms begins with invigorating our youth and inspiring them to extend our human capabilities to their maximum potential.
With new design innovations, students will recognize the importance of being mindful of the resources and process used to produce them to have a more positive impact on the environment. Stem 8 will prepare these eighth grade students for future opportunities in STEM classes offered at the high school and beyond.
