AP Literature and Composition
This College Board AP course engages students in the careful and deliberate
reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close
reading of selected texts, students will deepen their understanding of the
ways that writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for
their readers. As they read, students will consider a work’s structure, style,
and themes, as well as such elements as the use of figurative language,
imagery, symbolism, and tone. The syllabus includes works from various
genres and periods, concentrating on works of recognized literary merit.
Thoughtful discussion and writing accompany all reading. The approach to
the close reading that students practice in this course involves three
important elements: the experience of literature, the interpretation of
literature, and the evaluation of literature. (Source: http://
